Flows have increased a bit due to water releases from Green Peter reservoir, currently around 1,350 cfs and should remain so over the next few weeks. The counts at Willamette Falls as of Aug. 24 are around 5,100 summer steelhead. Most of the fish destined for the South Santiam have already arrived. They can be found for the most part below the deadline at Wiley Creek park and in sections downstream.

Fishing is generally best when flows are below 3,000 cfs.

The entire river is now open to trout fishing through the end of October. Below Foster Reservoir, anglers may keep up to 5 hatchery trout per day, but any wild trout must be released unharmed. Above Foster, trout fishing is catch-and-release with no bait allowed.
