Trout:The caddis remain thick and there are often huge clouds present in the evenings as long as it doesn't get too breezy. We are still seeing persistent PMD and PED hatches and the trout are looking for these mayflies with some regularity. Some of our best fishing has been early (spent caddis and mahogany spinners) and late (emergent sparkle pupa and e/c caddis). You can do well all day long on dries such as the X-Caddis or E/C Caddis if you concentrate on areas that are holding good shade. The fish are still eating most caddis imitations that are tossed into the right spots. In the morning nymphing continues to be productive, but with the great surface action why bother throwing nymphs? Stop by the Warm Springs shop to see some of our favorite caddis dries and spent patterns. Water temps are around 56-59 degrees near Warm Springs and the river has dropped to about 3700 CFS out of the dam.

Steelhead:There are steelhead in the lower 100 miles of the Deschutes right now! We landed one above Trout Creek three days ago, but the numbers are only really fishable below the fall at this point. Above average water temps in the lower 20 miles make early mornings your best bet to get them on a fly down low. Water temps are cooler as you move upriver and evening high temps are below the 70 degree mark above Macks Canyon and below 66 near the falls. The counts are extremely good over the dams so all we need is some cooler weather to turn this into a banner year for steelhead on the Deschutes! Check out these numbers: Over Bonneville the counts are up 32% over last year(+23493 fish), over The Dalles up 57%(+11953 fish)!!!
