Brown Trout (Salmo trutta)
Salmo trutta
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Actinopterygii
Order: Salmoniformes
Family: Salmonidae
Genus: Salmo
Species: t.
Body Type: A robust, somewhat large-headed trout with golden-brown to olive sides covered in distinctive black spots surrounded by light halos and red or orange spots with pale blue halos. The belly ranges from yellow to cream. Generally heavier-bodied than Rainbow Trout with a broader tail wrist.
Preferred Water Temperature: 50°F–65°F. More tolerant of slightly warmer water than Rainbow or Brook Trout — survives to 75°F but feeding slows significantly above 68°F. A fall spawner, actively feeding through autumn.
Habitat: Clear to moderately clear cold streams, spring creeks, and productive tailwaters. The most structure-oriented of the trout family — relates to undercut banks, overhanging tree roots, deep pools, log jams, and bridge pilings. In lakes they hold near cold water inflows, rocky structure, and the thermocline in summer.
Best Lures: Large jointed Rapala minnows (silver or gold) fished after dark produce trophy fish. Kastmaster and Krocodile spoons in gold work in rivers and lakes. Large streamers on a fly rod are the classic approach — Woolly Buggers, Muddler Minnows, and Sculpin patterns. Jerkbaits and stick baits at night catch the biggest fish in lakes. Spinner baits with large Colorado blades move water and attract fish in off-color conditions.
Best Baits: Live minnows and sculpins are excellent for trophy Browns over 5 lbs. Nightcrawlers produce consistent action — drift them naturally through pools. Single salmon eggs work in streams during fall. Crawfish tails are deadly in rocky rivers. Large live or dead shiners fished at night target the biggest fish.
Size & Weight: Stream fish typically 1–3 lbs; quality tailwater fish reach 8–12 lbs commonly. World record: 44 lbs 5 oz from Little Red River, Arkansas. European fish exceed 40 lbs in large reservoirs.
Top 5 Places to Catch Brown Trout: 1. Little Red River, Arkansas — world record water, consistent trophy fish 2. Madison River, Montana — world-class wild Brown Trout fishing 3. Au Sable River, Michigan — classic Eastern Brown Trout stream 4. San Juan River, New Mexico — trophy tailwater fish below Navajo Dam 5. Delaware River, New York/Pennsylvania — excellent wild Brown Trout population
